About the event

“A Heritage Celebration” is a free community event that celebrates the rich history and heritage of Crescent Heights. It’s being put together by the Heritage Planning Committee of the Crescent Heights Community Association. The idea for the event began when we learned that Jackie Ramsay, a local resident, had been working on 100 paintings of character homes in Crescent Heights. We thought “We’ve got to see those”, and guessed that there’s a lot of other people that would enjoy seeing them as well. Then we discovered we had booked the CHCA Hall for our event on the same weekend as Jane’s Walk, so we decided to organize a historic walking tour of Crescent Heights to make the day even more of a heritage celebration. Since we’re doing the walk in the morning and bringing everyone back to the Hall for a 2pm opening in the afternoon, we thought we’d add a few other things into the day as well. We’re putting together a display on the history of Crescent Heights, booking some entertainment, and organizing some refreshments. It promises to be a fun and informative day!

About Jane’s Walk

Jane’s Walk is a series of neighbourhood walking tours named after urban activist and writer Jane Jacobs. They’re led by volunteers and offered for free. Since Jane’s Walks are held annually on the first weekend of May, we thought it made perfect sense to coordinate a historical walking tour of Crescent Heights’ that focused on our unique historical homes, buildings and artifacts. The tour will last about 90 minutes, and will be led by local residents. The tour will start at 11:00 am at the Crescent Heights Community Centre and end at Rotary Park. (Just in time to attend the opening of the newest Mini Galleries exhibit – it’s not about heritage, but it will be fun.)

About the Art Exhibit

The “100 Storeys” art exhibit will be set up in the CHCA Hall from 2:00 to 5:00 pm. The exhibit will feature 100 individual paintings of heritage homes from the Crescent Heights community. The paintings have been created by local artist and community resident Jackie Ramsay. Jackie wanted to capture the unique character of the homes in Crescent Heights before increasing development pressure starts to see them disappear from the landscape. Some of these homes are over 100 years old! Each painting is 8”x 8” and painted with acrylic on board. Come and see if your home is one of them!

About the artist

Jackie has been a resident of Crescent Heights for over 35 years and has been painting for most of her life, having received her first set of paints and pastels at the age of 12.

Early on she decided that making a living might be easier if she took the commercial art route. After graduating from Dawson College in 1975, Jackie’s first job was as a fashion illustrator and assistant art director at a Montreal magazine. She then worked in the layout department of MacLeans Magazine for a few years before taking a job as an illustrator for the Montreal Star.

Eventually Jackie decided to head out west, working at an advertising agency for a few years, and then settling in to a graphic design role at CFAC Channel 2 Television. There she worked on all types of design projects over the years which included everything from set painting and courtroom sketching to billboards and image campaigns.

But Jackie’s first love has always been painting.

During Covid Jackie challenged herself to paint 100 of the character homes in Crescent Heights. She’s always loved the neighbourhood, and over the years while walking her dogs, took great pleasure in seeing how people landscaped their yards and painted or remodelled their homes. The “100 Storeys” project brings the beauty and charm of inner city living to life, and nods to the fact that this century old community has many stories to tell.

She’s excited to be exhibiting “100 Storeys” for the very first time at the Heritage Celebration event, and is looking forward to a great afternoon sharing her work with community residents.
